MEXT Scholarships
Since 1954, the Japanese Government's Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) has assisted over 65,000 foreign students, from more than 160 different countries, to study in Japan. The Ministry works in cooperation with national, local, public and private universities and trade schools to provide these scholarships. Annually MEXT offers Research, Undergraduate, Japan Studies, Teacher Training and Professional Training scholarships to U.S. citizens living in Michigan and Ohio through our Consulate in Detroit.

MEXT (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Government of Japan) offers scholarships to foreign students who wish to pursue Japanese Studies. This scholarship offers students the opportunity to study in Japan for a period of one year. Applicants must be between 18 and 30 years old and must be enrolled undergraduate students who are majoring in Japanese language and/or Japanese culture..

Research Student:
Eighteen month and two-year scholarships for graduate students to study at Japanese universities as research students in fields of art and natural science. Application materials will be available in the spring (around mid-April) on our website.
Undergraduate Student:
Up to five year scholarships at a Japanese college or university for students seeking an undergraduate degree, from a university in Japan, in the fields of social sciences/humanities or natural sciences. Applications are available in the spring (around mid-April).
Specialized Training College:
Three year scholarship for high school graduates between 18 and 22 years of age wishing to study at a Japanese professional training school. Applications are available in the spring (around mid-April).
